Input: a .3ds file (3DS
Studio file), and occasionally jpg or other texture files. Texture file formats
must be one of the picture formats that ArchiCAD supports. Currently these are
Bitmap, GIF, TIFF, JPG, PICT.
Output: a .gsm file, and occasionally some texture files (jpg,
gif, pict, ...) registered to ArchiCAD Library Part manager.
- Make
sure that at least one library part is loaded. (Otherwise nowhere to save
the converted .gsm file)
- Call
the add-on from the menu. (See Install)
- A
dialog should be appear. The add-on asks where is the 3ds file that is to be
converted.
- After
selecting the 3ds file, the loader dialog appears showing information about
point, polygon and object count. In this dialog, the X dimension(A) size, Y
dimension(B) size and the height can be set. There's an option to set all
objects and polyogns to be smoothed.
- If
there are texture links in the 3ds file, the add-on tries to find them in
the 3ds file's folder. If the add-on couldn't find a texture file, the user
is asked for them.
- If
there are texture files, and their source is determined, the add-on asks for
the place where to store these files. (Must be specified one by one.)
- The
add-on lists data into the 3D GDL script section. (The progress is shown.)
Types of these data are:
- 3D
hotspots (bounding box's hotspots omitted, because they weren't
necessary. The user can switch them on in the library part details.)
- texture
- material
- mesh
( verticies, texture coords, edges and polygons )
- The
add-on lists 2D contour lines into 2D GDL script section.(The progress is
tried to be shown, but the add-on couldn't get information about all this
process. This process mainly runs within ArchiCAD.) Also 2D hotspots are
written.
- The
add-on creates a new library part (or modifies if exists with the same name).
The name is generated from the original .3ds file name (without the.3ds
extension).
- A
message is shown about the created(or modified) .gsm file path.
- Click
OK.
- For
testing the created .gsm object, search this file in the default library
part location, and open with ArchiCAD. (Or you can open this file from
within ArchiCAD.)
- Press
"3D View" of the library part. If the 3D window of the library
part comes up with no message, then the conversion is successful.
